It seems that many new bartenders think the way to larger tips is by learning flair bartending.
Every since the movie Cocktail came out with Tom Cruise spinning and flipping bottles there has been a dramatic increase in what I like to call the "jester bartender".
Flair bartending is simply learning how to twirl, throw and catch and spin the bottles while making drinks. It is done to impress the customers in hopes that they will tip very well for this entertainment. I have worked in a few places that bring in flair bartending competitions for a night occasionally. In most of these places, if I had started throwing bottles I would have been in trouble.
I like to work in VERY busy bars. That's where the money is. I can make a good tip on every drink I serve if I learn how to treat customer's right and get them their drinks in a hurry. Spinning and twirling would definitely slow me down. In most places I worked if you broke a bottle, you paid for it. This would definitely be something to consider before taking flair bartending to your job.
It is not for everyone but is becoming more and more popular. Flair bartending is a learned skill. You wouldn't decide to play the piano and then get on stage in front of people the same night. So don't decide to try some tricks and start performing that night. If you want to try it, I suggest you practice and learn at home on your own time with water.
Make sure you're ready before you try it at work and make sure you ask the managements permission first. You don't want to cost the bar money and you a job.
If you do learn the flair bartending skills you can enter competitions in your area. This might help you bring a customer base to your job. The better you get the more competitions you can join.
Flair bartending always seemed more like buskering than bartending to me. However, there are people who really enjoy the prestige and recognition that comes from learning flair bartending.
I'm constantly amazed how FEW bartenders actually take the time to try some simple idea that will greatly increase their income while working the same shifts!
